Characteristics of a Bad ISP

All internet service providers are not created equal.

We say it quite often, but it should probably be said a lot more. There are good internet service providers and bad internet service providers, and sifting between the two can actually be a lot harder than you'd think. Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone. By implementing just a few tips and looking out for some telltale signs, you can save time, money, and a whole lot of headache when choosing an internet service provider!

Bad internet service providers almost always overpromise and under-deliver.

Ever heard the phrase, "too good to be true?" You'd be hard pressed to find a great internet service provider that underperforms or under-delivers. It's just not in our DNA. Look out for ISP's that are offering deals that are too good to be true, without anything to back them up in the way of reviews or testimonials. Do thorough research on these kinds of companies before you fully commit to them. Ask for an extended trial, or a shorter, month to month contract that can acclimatize you to the service before you sign anything long term. If it's a good company, representatives will have no problem working with you to help give you peace of mind. Beware if terms are too good to be true, and there's no way to verify them!

Bad ISP's typically don't communicate very well.

When it comes to business to business relationships, good communication is paramount. Unfortunately, most poor business internet providers don't communicate very well. Consistently long wait times, rude representatives, and a lot of run-arounds without a lot of problem solving are usually all indicators of an ISP you want to stay far away from. Of course, not every representative is great, tech is helpful, or wait time is short and sweet-- but, in all honesty, you shouldn't be making too many concessions for too long. There are too many other great internet service providers to choose from.

Bad ISP's are more concerned about their bottom lines than you.

When you pay for a service, it's your right to assume that that service should cater to you. With some internet service providers, however, that's simply not the case. Internet service providers that don't have your best interests at heart are more concerned with quantity than quality. These are the providers that spend all of their time, effort, and money on the sales pitch, but very little on the actual followup. Communication may be difficult, pricing may be hard to understand, and service may be next to impossible to get. Run away quickly!
